About SIMA


  • Established in 1933 at the initiative of 1st Finance Minister of Independent India, Late Sir R.K. Shanmukham Chetty representing the entire textile value chain in South India.
  • Started with 11 members; now has over 500 members covering all the sectors (fibre to finishing).
  • Played a key role in developing the textile industry.
  • Earned goodwill and brand image across the textile value chain in the country and more so with the government; plays a lead role in all policy making bodies

Today, SIMA is the single largest employers’ organization representing the organized textile industry in the world and the only employers’ organization of the textile industry having in-house expertise to advice right from designing the textile project to marketing.

Our Targets

  • Achieve 50% production capacity in all the sectors at the national level
  • Facilitate to attract atleast 60% of investment in Southern States
  • Promote six million new jobs for women
  • Promote 10 world class integrated textile parks in the Southern States
  • Achieve 70% share in the national exports of textiles and clothing
  • Liaise with various institutions and organizations and facilitate to develop world class training centres, R & D centres, testing laboratories, etc.
  • Bridge the gap in the industry requirements and production of cotton in terms of quantity and quality



  • Facilitate the member mills to adopt appropriate technology, have vertical integration, improve scale of operation and value addition, remain cost effective and be competitive in the global market
  • Guide the member mills to meet the international environment and social standards and give more thrust to develop the society
  • Inspire member mills to follow progressive human resource policies, systems and practices
  • Constantly follow up with the government and maintain a conducive environment enabling the different segments of the textile industry to perform with a sustained competitiveness

1933 Sir R K Shanmukham Chetty moots forming an Association for South India with 11 Members
1937 Brings standards for work norms and wages and 26 days work per month with night shift
1938 Six days casual leave and seven days sick leave for workers with pay; drafts rules and regulations for workers, the forerunner for standing orders; brings systems for women employment
1939 Joins hands with International Labour Organsiation, Geneva to bring systems in labour practices and C S Rathnasabapathy Mudaliar attends ILO conference
1940 Takes initiative for war fund
1942 Moots one month wages as bonus; Coordinates supply of hank yarn to Handloom societies
1943 Submits proposal to recognise textile course at PSG & Sons’ Charities
1945 Becomes a Member of Employers’ Federation of India
1947 Appoints Labour Officer to handle IR issues & forms Wage Board
1952 Donates one lakh yard cloth to the victims of cyclones in Tamil Nadu
1954 F A J Taylor, ILO conducts training for SIMA top management
1955 Initiates installing a viscose staple fibre plant in Tamil Nadu / SIMA building inaugurated by Thiru K Kamaraj, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu; Incorporation of SITRA
1956 Landmark settlement with scientific based categories of workers, job description, work norms, wages and incentives which became the guideline for the entire nation; SITRA commences operation in SIMA premises
1958 Incorporation of South India Viscose
1959 Commences publishing monthly statistical bulletin
1960 Becomes a Member of Indian Cotton Mills’ Federation (ICMF)
1961 Contributes for the victims of floods in Madras, Mysore and Kerala
1965 Leads overseas delegation to boost exports; overseas implementation of bonus and DA; contributes for the flood affected victims of Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi
1969 Implements SIMA formula for bonus
1971 Contributes for the construction of Coimbatore stadium


  • A knowledge based organisation in the country having rich data bank and competent professionals to advise members and give right inputs to the government and other organisations
  • Partnering with Central and Southern State Government in framing textile related policies
  • SIMA CD&RA is the only NGO partnering with the Government and developing cotton; producing genetically pure seeds and supplying to the farmers
  • Single largest regional association of Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI)’
  • Has commendable position at TEXPROCIL, EFSI, CAB, SITRA, various Committees like EPF, ESI, Taxation, BIS, Power, etc. (one of the SIMA nominee is always an office bearer in CITI / TEXPROCIL)
